Being Avinash (Karwaan-2018)

Avinash, another repressed man who became the victim of his father’s expectations. He always wanted to become a photographer, but ends up in a software firm because his father forced him pick that job. This lack of passion for his job is evident in his work. And these points gives him a similarity to Ved Vardhan Sahni from Tamasha.

His hate towards his father, his work, everything had deeply affected his behavior. He is a person who completely want shut himself off from socialising. And this leads to the fact he realises later that he is very much similar to his father. The way he behaves with Tanya, a companion he got in his journey, is very much similar to his father’s. The realisation that he is exactly like his father comes out as a shock to Avinash. Later when he meets his ex-girlfriend, Rumana aka Rumi, he shares this with her. Her reply to him goes on as follows,

“It is a never-ending cycle. Jab tak ek bete ko realize hota hai uska baap sahi tha, uska khud ka ek beta hota hai jo samajhta hai woh galat hai.” (By the time a son realizes that his father was right, he has a son who tells him he is wrong).

The moment when he runs into his ex-girlfriend is completely unexpected. The most surprising thing is how she reacts to this situation. Rumi is now leading a wonderful married life. In the past, Avinash ran away soon after the college without a closure. While we expected her to show that grudge towards him, all we see is a friendly reunion. She was very happy to see him after all these years. When Avinash share his thoughts with Rumi, she gives him the advice of letting go of his hate against his father. This reunion gives Avinash push into the journey of his self-discovery.

The moment when Avinash and Tanya was about to leave Rumi’s house, we sense very similar awkwardness between Rumi and Avinash. For a guy who always ran away from situations, Avinash doesn’t know how to handle this situation. Rumi, as always sensing his discomfort, comes forward to say good bye. She takes the responsibility of saying good bye as she understands Avinash doesn’t know how to do it..

“Main akela hi chala tha janib-e-manzil magar, log saath aate gaye aur karwaan banta gaya.”(I started all alone towards the goal, people kept joining and it began to turn into a caravan).
